CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

FINN

We’d turned my apartment upside down and neither of us found a thing. I stood on my balcony, which faced Eden I. The ship was so huge, it obliterated my view of the ocean and most of the active areas of the city. From here, I could just make out people moving in and out of the ship but none of the details. Were they sick? Were there fewer out there today than there had been yesterday?

One of the ever-present curtains billowed into my face, and I batted it away with a curse. And then an idea came to me.

If I couldn’t get anything out of the people at the top, maybe there’d be clues to find at the bottom.

I need to get to Wylie’s rooms, I told Dom.

Your lunch is almost ready—

Never mind that, I cut in. Can you help me get into her apartment?

There was a pause, during which I sensed him moving. I’m on my way, he said.

Standing directly in front of my main door, I prepared to dash out the moment Dom arrived, but it took longer than I expected.

Get ready, he finally said. I heard a soft thump from just outside my door, then it slid open and I ran out of my room and into the waiting lift. As the door shut, I noticed a syn guard slumped to the ground just outside my apartment.

Problems?

Dom grunted softly. There were guards stationed on Wylie’s floor as well. I needed to get them out of the way or else they would have reported you.

I nodded. Thank you. Should we have hidden that guard in my room? I asked belatedly.

Dom shook his head. They are more likely to discover he is offline before anyone would locate his physical form. We will have to be quick. He turned to look at me. We will be quick, right?

I knew he wanted me to tell him what I had planned, but I was too busy thinking.

In Wylie’s rooms, I went straight for her closet, mentally crossing my fingers they hadn’t been cleared. Relief flooded through me when I found the two matching backpacks sitting on the floor.

I grabbed the one with an F embroidered on the front. Turning away from the one marked with W was harder than I thought it would be. We’d only used the personal flight packs once together, while Wylie had used hers a couple more times. I’d given them to her when we made landfall, hoping we’d spend a lot of time together exploring our new world. Resentment and anger over the direction my life had taken now fueled me.

I’m going down to the ground to see what I can learn there, I told Dom as I strapped on the contraption. Search here for the packet.

Dom’s expression was hard to read, but he nodded and watched me as I downloaded the pack and accessed it.

All right, then. I’ll be back as fast as I can.

Dom was in the middle of a formal bow when I turned away, ran toward the balcony, and threw myself over it.
